One of the best things about visiting Northeast Florida is that you are never more than a short drive from the ocean. But not all beaches are created equal, and knowing which stretch of sand matches your mood can make the difference between a good beach day and a perfect one. Here is our local guide to the best beaches on the First Coast.
Amelia Island — Fernandina Beach
The northernmost beach on the First Coast is also one of its most beautiful. Wide, uncrowded sands backed by rolling dunes make Amelia Island feel untouched. The south end near Fort Clinch State Park is particularly pristine, with opportunities to find shark teeth and watch ships entering the St. Marys River. The town of Fernandina Beach, with its Victorian downtown, is a short walk from the sand and offers excellent restaurants and shops.
Best for: Families, shelling, nature lovers, and anyone who wants a quieter beach experience.
Atlantic Beach & Neptune Beach
These neighboring beach communities have a laid-back, local vibe that sets them apart from the more commercial stretches to the south. The beaches are clean and relatively quiet, and the town centers along Atlantic Boulevard and Third Street offer surf shops, coffee houses, and some of the best casual dining in the area. The Sea Walk Pavilion hosts free concerts and events throughout the year.
Best for: Couples, surfers, and visitors who want to feel like a local rather than a tourist.
Jacksonville Beach
The most energetic beach on the First Coast, Jax Beach has a boardwalk vibe with restaurants, bars, and shops right on the oceanfront. The Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier is a landmark, and the area around it buzzes with activity year-round. If you want beach time combined with nightlife and dining, this is your spot.
Best for: Groups, nightlife lovers, and visitors who want everything within walking distance.
Ponte Vedra Beach
Just south of Jacksonville Beach, the vibe shifts dramatically. Ponte Vedra Beach is quieter, more upscale, and backed by some of the most valuable real estate on the First Coast. The beach itself is gorgeous — wide sands, clear water, and far fewer crowds than the beaches to the north. Access points are less frequent, which helps keep it peaceful. During spring, this stretch is also a prime spot for sea turtle nesting.
Best for: Relaxation, long walks, luxury vacation renters, and nature enthusiasts.
Vilano Beach
This under-the-radar gem sits just north of the St. Augustine Inlet. Vilano is the kind of beach that locals keep to themselves — natural, undeveloped, and uncrowded. The north end near the old pier ruins has excellent surf fishing, and the views of the St. Augustine Lighthouse across the inlet are stunning. The small commercial area along Vilano Road has a handful of excellent restaurants.
Best for: Surfers, surf fishing, solitude seekers, and anyone who wants an off-the-beaten-path experience.
St. Augustine Beach
The most accessible beach near St. Augustine's historic district, St. Augustine Beach combines convenient access with a relaxed coastal town atmosphere. The pier is a great spot for fishing or just watching the waves, and the restaurants along A1A Beach Boulevard offer everything from casual fish tacos to upscale seafood dining. The beach itself is wide and family-friendly.
Best for: Families, convenience, visitors combining beach time with St. Augustine sightseeing.
Anastasia State Park Beach
Inside Anastasia State Park, this beach offers the most natural coastal experience near St. Augustine. No development, no boardwalk — just pristine sand, dunes, and ocean. The park also offers kayak and canoe rentals on the lagoon side, nature trails, and excellent bird watching. A small daily entry fee keeps crowds manageable.
Best for: Nature lovers, kayakers, bird watchers, and anyone seeking an unspoiled beach day.
