Planning a vacation to Northeast Florida is exciting, but with over 40 miles of coastline and multiple distinct destinations, knowing where to start can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks down everything you need to know to plan a First Coast vacation that matches your style, budget, and interests.
Step 1: Choose Your Home Base
The First Coast stretches from Amelia Island in the north to St. Augustine in the south, with the Jacksonville Beaches and Ponte Vedra Beach in between. Each area has a distinct character.
Amelia Island is ideal for couples, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a quieter, more upscale experience. The island has a small-town feel with excellent dining, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife. It is also the most removed from urban amenities, which is either a plus or a minus depending on your perspective.
Jacksonville Beaches (Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach) offer the most variety — from quiet residential stretches to a lively boardwalk scene. This is the best base for groups that want a mix of beach time, nightlife, dining, and easy access to Jacksonville's cultural attractions.
Ponte Vedra Beach is the luxury option. Quieter and more exclusive, with access to world-class golf and some of the most beautiful, uncrowded beaches on the coast. Ideal for golf trips, couples retreats, and families who want a resort-quality experience in a private rental.
St. Augustine is the choice for history buffs, foodies, and anyone who wants to combine beach time with cultural exploration. America's oldest city offers a walkable historic district, incredible restaurants, and a unique character that no other First Coast destination can match.
Step 2: Book Your Rental
We recommend booking your vacation rental at least 2-3 months in advance for peak season (June-August) and major events. Off-season and shoulder season bookings can often be made 4-6 weeks out.
When choosing a rental, consider proximity to your must-do activities. If fishing is a priority, a rental near a marina saves driving time. If beach time is the main event, beachfront or ocean-view properties are worth the premium. If dining and nightlife matter, look for rentals within walking distance of a town center.
All Conine Coastal Travel rentals include fresh linens, fully equipped kitchens, high-speed WiFi, and beach essentials. Many also include bikes, kayaks, and paddleboards. Check the individual listing for details.
Step 3: Plan Your Activities
The biggest mistake first-time visitors make is trying to do too much. Northeast Florida is a relaxation destination first, and the best vacations here include plenty of unstructured time for beach lounging, sunset watching, and aimless exploration.
That said, we recommend planning one or two organized activities per day and leaving the rest open. Popular choices include fishing charters, eco-tours, paddleboard lessons, guided kayak trips, St. Augustine sightseeing, and sunset cruises.
Our concierge team can build a day-by-day itinerary based on your group's interests, ages, and energy level. This is a free service for all Conine Coastal Travel guests.
Step 4: What to Pack
Northeast Florida is casual. You will not need formal attire unless you have dinner reservations at a resort restaurant. Here are the essentials.
Always bring: Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+), polarized sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, light layers for cool evenings, sandals and one pair of closed-toe shoes for nature trails, and insect repellent for evening outdoor activities.
Skip: Heavy jackets (even in winter, a light fleece is sufficient), formal wear, and excessive beach gear — our rentals include chairs, umbrellas, and coolers, and our equipment rental service covers everything else.
Step 5: Getting Here and Getting Around
Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is the primary airport, with direct flights from most major US cities. From the airport, drive times are approximately 40 minutes to Jacksonville Beaches, 50 minutes to Amelia Island, 45 minutes to Ponte Vedra Beach, and 90 minutes to St. Augustine.
A rental car is essential. While individual beach communities are walkable, moving between destinations requires driving. Uber and Lyft are available but not always reliable outside of Jacksonville proper.
