One of the most common questions we get is 'when is the best time to visit?' The honest answer is that every season on the First Coast has something to offer. But depending on what you are looking for — perfect beach weather, fewer crowds, specific events, or the best rates — certain times of year may suit you better than others.
Spring (March - May): The Sweet Spot
Spring is widely considered the best time to visit Northeast Florida, and for good reason. Temperatures range from the mid-70s to low 80s, humidity is comfortable, and the water starts warming up for swimming by late April. Spring also brings some of the area's biggest events.
March brings THE PLAYERS Championship to TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach — one of the biggest events in professional golf. Even if you are not a golf fan, the energy and atmosphere around the event are worth experiencing.
April is peak wildflower season in the state parks, and the weather is ideal for outdoor activities — kayaking, paddleboarding, biking, and hiking are all comfortable without the summer heat.
May is the sweet spot: summer-like weather, warm enough to swim, but before the peak summer crowds and humidity arrive. Vacation rental rates are typically lower than June-August, making May an excellent value.
Summer (June - August): Beach Season
Summer is peak season for families, and the beaches are at their liveliest. Temperatures reach the upper 80s to low 90s, and afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually brief. The ocean water temperature reaches the upper 70s to low 80s — perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and water sports.
Expect higher vacation rental rates and more competition for popular properties. Book early — our best beachfront rentals for summer weekends often fill by March.
Pro tip: Plan outdoor activities for the morning hours, retreat to your air-conditioned rental during the afternoon heat, and come back out for sunset. This rhythm matches how locals live during summer and keeps everyone comfortable.
Hurricane season officially runs June through November, with peak activity in August-October. While major storms are relatively rare on the First Coast, it is worth having a flexible booking policy during this window.
Fall (September - November): The Local's Favorite
Ask any First Coast local their favorite season and most will say fall. The summer crowds thin out, temperatures drop to comfortable levels (70s-80s), and the ocean stays warm enough for swimming through October. Vacation rental rates drop significantly after Labor Day, making fall an excellent value.
September can still feel like summer, but by late September the humidity breaks and evenings become genuinely pleasant.
October is arguably the best month on the First Coast. Perfect weather, warm ocean water, lighter crowds, and lower rates. It is also excellent for fishing — the fall redfish and flounder runs are legendary.
November brings the start of St. Augustine's Nights of Lights, one of the top holiday light displays in the country. The entire historic district is draped in millions of white lights from mid-November through January. It is magical, especially experienced by boat on the Matanzas Bay.
Winter (December - February): Mild and Festive
Northeast Florida winters are mild by national standards — daytime highs in the 60s with occasional dips into the 50s. It is not beach-swimming weather, but it is perfect for exploring St. Augustine, golfing, fishing, hiking, and enjoying outdoor dining.
December and January are peak Nights of Lights season. St. Augustine is at its most enchanting, and the mild weather makes evening strolls through the illuminated streets comfortable.
February offers the best rates of the year and the lightest crowds. It is an excellent time for a couples getaway or a golf trip, and by late February, spring is already starting to show.
Snowbird season means the First Coast's population swells with visitors from the Northeast and Midwest. Restaurants and attractions are busier than summer crowds might suggest, particularly on Amelia Island and in St. Augustine.
Our Recommendation
For first-time visitors, we recommend October or May. You get the best weather, reasonable rates, and lighter crowds. For families with school-age children, June is ideal — summer vacation has just started, and you beat the July-August peak. For a romantic getaway, the Nights of Lights season (mid-November through January) is hard to top. Contact Conine Coastal Travel to plan your visit.
